A Rare American Classical InlaidA Rare American Classical Inlaid Satinwood Astragal End Work Table c. 1815 attributed to Duncan Phyfe New York hinged lid enclosing an interior fitted with a writing panel looking glass and two demilune trays; the frieze faced as a drawer tambour door below reeded urn standard saber legs with waterleaf carving brass paw feet casters height 31 in. width 25 in. depth 12 1/2 in. Note: This rare example is part of a very small group of satinwood work tables related to the Phyfe workshop. Others include a table purchased from Phyfe in 1813 by Victor du Pont for his niece Victorine du Pont Bauduy for her marriage and now conserved by the Hagley Museum and Library Wilmington Delaware. A second table is conserved by the Metropolitan Museum of Art (acc. 1986.84.2). The table offered here is nearly identical to the Met example and shares dimensions and case details with the du Pont example. Reference: Kenny Brown Bretter and Thurlow. The table offered here has laminated and saw cut layers at the turned corners of the skirt a detail of fine craftsmanship seen in a card table attributed to Phyfe and descended in a New York family recently discovered by antiquarian David Petrovsky.
